Layer 3 switches, also referred to as multilayer switches, are switch that can perform both routing and switching functions depending on the configuration.
Layer 3 switches find many applications in networking; for instance, layer 3 switches can be used for intervlan routing, which is traditionally achieved using router on-a-stick configuration.
Packet tracer and other new-generation network simulation software have layer 3 switches included in them to enhance seamless simulation before real-world deployment of network projects that need layer 3 switches.
In this post, I will show you How To Add Layer 3 Switch in Packet Tracer.
Here is a video showing how to add a Layer 3 switch in a packet tracer.
How To Add Layer 3 Switch in Packet Tracer (Steps)
Step 1: Open the packet tracer simulation software.
Step 2: Select “Network devices” at the bottom left corner.
Step 3: Select ‘Switches‘ from the bottom left corner.
Step 4: Drag the “layer 3 switch” and drop it on your network.
Step 5: Join the “Layer 3 Switch” with other network devices using appropriate connectors.
Here is a network topology that has ‘layer 3 switch’ added:
